Here is some general information about keeping a Keeshond puppy healthy when you take it home from Calivale. WORMING:Your puppy will have been wormed at eight weeks and will require re-worning at ten and twelve weeks with an all worming product, we recommend Drontal All Wormer tablets, available from your vet or a pet warehouse. You will also need to worm every three months after that with an all worming brand of tablet. If you are unsure, ask your vet when the puppy has its second vaccination. HEARTWORM:Your puppy will need to be given heartworm medication we suggest that you discuss this with your vet. You can buy daily tablets or monthly chewy tablets (we recommend Heartguard Plus chewy treats), but please cover your puppy from heartworm from at least three months of age onwards. Once your puppy is older than six months of age, you can have it injected with a heartworm vaccination once a year - consult your vet for more information. FLEAS AND TICKS:Keeshonds do not normally attract fleas and ticks, but if your Kees does come into contact with these parasites, we recommend you use a monthly treatment that is applied to the back of the neck of the Kees. It is best not to use a flea and tick collar as it will damage your dogs coat around the neck. There are also some good flea and tick shampoos on the market, some are tea-tree oil based, they are good to use as well. When treating your Kees, do not forget to treat the sleeping area as well - and if you have other dogs or cats, treat them as well. SLEEPING:Keeshonds will not sleep in a cane basket or a kennel, so do not purchase either. Keeshonds are quite happy sleeping on a sack or trampoline bed. These are available from most pet stores / warehouses. If the bed has a hessian sack covering, make or purchase a shade cloth style covering for it (as hessian sacks can sometimes cause skin irritations and attract fleas). VACCINATIONS:A Calivale Keeshond puppy has been vaccinated against Parvo-Virus, Hepatitis and Distemper at six weeks of age. It will need to be vaccinated again at twelve and sixteen weeks of age and after that, annually. You will receive a vaccination card with your puppy which you will need to take to the vet when the puppy’s second and subsequent vaccinations are due. WEIGHT:Always watch your dogs weight and never let your Kees become fat - as extra weight and a thick coat can be very distressing for your dog. As your puppy is growing, don’t worry if it is a little heavier than average, but once the dog is twelve months and over, it should not weigh more than twenty kilograms. A good guide for weight is approximately a kilo in weight for every inch (2.5cm) in height. Special attention must be taken with neutered Keeshonds as they tend to put on weight very easily. NEUTERING:We recommend the neutering of pet Keeshonds. This can be done from eight weeks of age with keyhole surgery. It is best to have your Keeshond neutered by six months of age. Consult to your vet for further information.
